History of Grama Panchayat

The main occupations of the people were traditionally agriculture and agricultural labour. Over time, people’s dependence on agriculture gradually declined. The traditional coir industry, fishing, and fish-processing sectors continue to provide significant employment opportunities. The fisheries sector is one of the important economic sectors of Chavara.

Coir-making is the major traditional industry in the Chavara Block Panchayat area, aptly reflected in the old saying, “Chavara, Panmana and Thevalakkara must be processed with coir fibre.”

The first high school in the Panchayat area was Chavara Boys’ High School, which celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 1981. The main building of this school was constructed in 1906.

The people of Chavara Grama Panchayat are mainly engaged in fishing, coir production, and various non-agricultural daily-wage occupations.

Azhakathu Padmanabha Kurup, the author of Ramachandravilasam, the first major epic in Malayalam, is one of Chavara’s distinguished personalities. The unique teachings and activities of Sree Chattampi Swamikal have also contributed to preserving the name of this land in the pages of history.

Chavara has been the birthplace of several outstanding personalities who have passed away, including Pulimana Parameswaran Pillai, C. N. Sreekandan Nair, O. Nanu Upadhyayan, and V. Sambasivan.

Chavara also takes pride in having given the state the distinguished leader Baby John.
